Language issue can hardly be regulated by law; it requires a natural approach. Volodymyr Lytvyn, Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, made the foregoing statement in the interview to "Vid Pershoyi Osoby" program (Era Radio).
Asked whether the Verkhovna Rada can adopt the Law on a special status of the Russian language, V.Lytvyn reminded that several bills on language policy have been registered at the Parliament.
"Language issue can hardly be regulated by law; it requires a natural approach," the Head of the Parliament stated. "Language means competition. A more competitive language wins." However, he stressed that Ukrainian language should have a high status in Ukraine. "I have nothing against the Russian language, but its status can not be raised at the expense of the Ukrainian language," V.Lytvyn explained.
The Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine calls for studying the language issue carefully and adopting a balanced decision. "Cultural-national demands should be fairly satisfied," he stated.
